The Sonnex Case

The ‘Sonnex Case’ refers to the torture and murder of two French students, Laurent Bonomo and Gabriel Ferez, in New Cross, London in June 2008 by Dano Sonnex and Nigel Farmer. At the time of these killings Dano Sonnex was subject to probation supervision on a post-release licence from custody. Sonnex had originally been sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment in March 2003 at the age of 17 for offences of assault with intent to resist arrest, having an imitation firearm with intent, attempted robbery, robbery x 4 and wounding with intent.

When Bonomo and Ferez were murdered in 2008 there was an outstanding arrest warrant for Sonnex’s recall to prison because he had breached his licence condition by being charged with a further offence of ‘handling stolen goods’. Before the recall was affected Sonnex and Farmer committed the brutal murders, breaking into the flat of the French students and binding both Bonomo and Ferez by their hands and feet, and subjecting them to a prolonged torture that resulted in their deaths.

Subsequent investigations into the case highlighted shortcomings in the probation service’s risk assessment and delays in processing Sonnex’s recall to prison. High probation caseloads and staff shortages were noted as contributory factors. Sonnex’s supervising probation officer had a caseload of 127 people and was qualified for just one year (Morgan, 2009). As a result of the shortcomings in this case, the Chief Probation Officer in the London Probation Area resigned.

One of the outcomes of the review of this case was increased pressure to recall to prison people who had breached their licence in any way.
